A Guide to Different Electronic Circuit Designs

If you’re planning to build any kind of modern electrical device, an electronic device circuit design is an essential part of the process. It may look complicated and overwhelming but this should not hinder you from starting your project. Once you get familiar with the entire process and the different types of components required for your device, establishing your own circuit system would not be as difficult as it seems. 

An electronic circuit is typically composed of hundreds and sometimes even thousands of parts depending on the intricacy of the design. This is why precision and accuracy are both vital when it comes to both designing and assembling every unit. Each electronic circuit system is different and made unique according to the unit it would be installed in. Some electronic devices may comprise more than one circuit system which means manufacturers would need several types of electronic circuits.

The Five Fundamental Parts of an Electronic Device Circuit Design

Though an electronic circuit is typically composed of multitudinous parts, there are five fundamental components necessary in each design. Some may come in different shapes or sizes and functions depending on the device that it was specifically intended for. 

Transistors

Considered as semiconductors, transistors may function as an amplifier or a switch. They can also either insulate or conduct electricity and are typically installed in large numbers. Transistors are small but very durable and typically do not require frequent replacement or maintenance. One of the two main types of transistors is the bipolar junction transistor. It has the ability to use both electrons and electron holes as charge carriers. The other type of transistor is called the field-effect transistor. It utilizes an electric field to control electric currents in a semiconductor.

Resistors

The resistors in an electronic device circuit design are in charge of controlling the electric currents that flow through them. They can also control the voltage in each component that is attached to them. Overloading may be a possible risk if resistors are not used since other parts might not be able to handle the voltages required for the device. 

Diodes

Also considered as semiconductors, diodes are responsible for acting as a one-way switch for electric currents. They stop the currents from traveling in the opposite direction and provide one path for them to flow easily. Diodes can function this way since they have low resistance in one direction and high resistance in the other. 

Capacitors

A capacitor installed in an electronic device circuit design is what stores and releases the electrical energy throughout the system. It also allows alternating currents to pass through without passing direct currents. They typically consist of two insulated conductors that are placed closely within one another.

Inductors

Sometimes referred to as a reactor, coil, or choke, inductors are passive two-terminal components that store energy in a magnetic field when electricity is passing through. It typically consists of an insulated wire that is wounded to resemble the shape of a coil. The main role of an inductor in an electronic device circuit design is to prevent sudden changes within the electric currents being used. 

The Different Types of Electronic Circuit Designs

After getting familiar with the components necessary for your project, it’s important to determine the different types of electronic circuits for you to assess which one is required for the assembly. It also helps to know how to draft each design properly to avoid confusion when starting the production process. Here are some of the different types of electronic circuit designs.

Schematic Circuit Diagram

A schematic diagram is often used in many industries where manufacturers need to follow a standardized format of a specific design. A schematic for an electronic device circuit design is a representation of how different components are interconnected. It utilizes standardized symbols to visually simplify the complex design and is often used for constructing, drafting, and maintaining electronic or electrical equipment.

Electronic Switch Circuit Design

Switches are basically what controls the interruption of electrical flow in a device. Typically, the electronic device circuit design for switches depicts two or more terminals that are connected to metal contacts that switch close when together and switch open when apart. This happens since electricity cannot flow through the metal contacts if they are not touching one another. 

Analog Circuit Design

The previous components that were discussed above is what’s mainly depicted in an analog circuit design. The design is of those in which the current or voltage changes over time to conform to the information presented. The wires are commonly illustrated as lines and every other component has its own specific symbolic representation. 

Digital Circuit Design

A digital circuit design is necessary for a device that may require a digital presentation. The design shows electrical signals in the configuration of discrete values. Typically, data is represented through a series of zeros and ones. Digital circuits often perform computations by providing both memory and logic. They are often utilized to make computing chips such as microprocessors.

Mixed Circuit Design

It’s important to note that an electronic device circuit design is often composed of both analog and digital circuits. This is what is referred to as a mixed circuit system. Separating the analog and digital circuits, however, is highly important to achieve optimal performance and reduce any noise. 

FPGA Circuit Design

FPGA is an acronym for “field-programmable gate arrays” and this type of circuit design is configured using a hardware level by the user rather than a microcontroller. It’s typically used in high-performance systems such as aerospace, defense, and medical applications. The biggest benefit of using an FPGA circuit is the fact that it can be repurposed and reprogrammed.

Microcontroller Circuit Design

Considered as an integrated circuit, a microcontroller is often programmed to perform or execute various tasks and instructions. Typically, a microcontroller electronic device circuit design is digital but many units that are made nowadays also incorporate analog components. They are used in most electronic devices that can be found in this modern era of technology.
